The Lagavulin Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky Offerman Edition Aged  11 Years was a marriage made in whisky heaven. This sensational single malt was the product of an authentic collaboration between Nick Offerman and Lagavulin distillery manager Colin Gordon as an ode to the mutual respect and adoration the two share.

Nick Offerman is best known for his role as libertarian government worker Ron Swanson in the cult TV show Parks and Recreation… a "man’s man" who loves meat, woodworking, and Lagavulin whisky – which by sheer coincidence just happened to be Nick’s favourite whisky too. The whisky and even the distillery makes regular appearances on the show across its seven seasons, with Ron declaring Lagavulin 16 Year Old to be his drink of choice, and the nectar of the gods.

Since Parks and Rec wrapped up, Offerman has forged a strong relationship with Lagavulin, and has sipped a dram on New Year’s Eve, Father’s Day, and during the world-renowned Yule Log video that’s become a Christmas favourite for whisky lovers around the world.

Perhaps given this relationship it was inevitable, but in 2019, it finally happened… Lagavulin and Offerman were proud to release the limited edition Lagavulin Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky Offerman Edition Aged 11 Years

They followed this with a second release in 2021, and this whisky was also aged for 11 years and then finished for 4 months in barrels which previously held Guinness - but not just any Guinness barrels though: American white oak barrels from the Open Gate Guinness brewery in Maryland.

So - how does this unusual maturation affect the flavour? Well, it does tasted like a typical Lagavulin, but some of the red fruits associated with the flagship bottlings have been replaced with a cleaner malt-led flavour with barley sugars and a bit of crisp apple bite, but complemented by a mature, soft, and silky texture. The use of American white oak barrels (which are high in vanillin compounds) for the Guinness seems to be imparting even more vanilla than usual.

After this release, Lagavulin have added another 2 expressions to the "Offerman Range" - both of which were aged for 11 years, and each aged in different casks:

We'll give the last word to Nick Offerman himself - “I have travelled the world and sampled many attempts at pleasing nectars, but it is solely this distillation of Islay; a tiny, charismatic Scottish isle, that has claimed my palate. Yea, and my heart into the bargain.”
