Kura Rum Cask Finish Blended Malt Japanese Whisky (700ml, 40% ABV

Price

$159.00

Kura Rum Cask Finish is a distinctive blended Japanese whisky from Helios Distillery in Okinawa, Japan’s subtropical southern islands. Drawing on Helios’ long history of producing both whisky and rum, this expression brings the two worlds together, finishing the whisky in casks previously used to mature the distillery’s own Japanese rum.

The rum cask finish adds an extra layer of richness and sweetness to the whisky, with notes of caramel, vanilla and tropical fruit complementing softer flavours of malt, oak and gentle spice. The result is smooth, rounded and approachable, while retaining enough complexity to make it an intriguing dram for more experienced whisky drinkers.

Produced in the warm, humid climate of Okinawa, Kura offers a very different expression of Japanese whisky from those made in the cooler regions of Honshu and Hokkaido. The combination of its unusual provenance and rum-cask influence makes this a particularly interesting bottle for anyone looking to explore beyond the best-known names in Japanese whisky.

About the Distillery

Kura Whisky is produced by Helios Distillery in Okinawa, Japan’s subtropical southern islands. Founded in 1961, Helios began by producing traditional Okinawan spirits, particularly awamori, before expanding into rum, liqueurs and whisky. Okinawa provides a dramatically different environment from Japan’s better-known whisky regions: its warm, humid, maritime climate accelerates the interaction between spirit and oak, helping create whiskies with a distinctive richness and depth of flavour.

The Kura range reflects Helios’ combination of Japanese distilling tradition and Okinawan character. Perhaps most distinctive is the distillery’s use of awamori casks alongside more conventional maturation techniques, bringing an unusual local influence to some of its whiskies. The resulting style can combine soft fruit, vanilla and caramel with gentle spice, oak and subtle tropical notes — making Kura an intriguing example of Japanese whisky produced far beyond the famous distilleries of Honshu.
